Developing scientist Oral Paper and Poster Competitions

The International Committee on Food Microbiology and Hygiene (ICFMH) of the International Union of Microbiological Societies (IUMS) will sponsor a Developing Scientist Oral Paper and Poster Competitions at FoodMicro 2018, 3-6 September, 2018, Berlin, Germany.
-To encourage developing students and recent graduates to present their original research research in the area of food microbiology.
-To foster professionalism in students and recent graduates through contact with peers who attend the FoodMicro 2018.
-This competition is open to undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate students, including those who have graduated not more than one year prior to the deadline for submitting abstracts.
-Entrants in the competition must be the first author.
-Entrants in the poster paper competition must be present to answer questions for a specified time during the assigned session.
-The work must represent original research completed and presented by the entrant.
-Students may enter only one oral or poster paper in the competition.
-Acceptance of an abstract for presentation as a poster is independent of acceptance as a competition finalist.
-Abstracts not accepted by the conference for poster presentations will be disqualified from the competition.
-In addition to following the instructions in the “Call for Abstracts,” competition entrants must indicate if the paper is to be entered in the Oral Paper or Poster Award competition.
– Competition entrants selected as finalists will be notified by the chairperson of the ICFMH Awards Committee.
-Entrants must be registered for FoodMicro 2018.
All abstracts submitted for presentation and entered in either the Developing Scientist Oral Paper or Poster Award competition at FoodMicro 2018 will be reviewed by the Awards Committee. Only eligible abstracts accepted for oral paper or poster presentation and entered in the competition will be evaluated.
-Abstract – Clarity, comprehensiveness, and conciseness.
-Scientific Quality – Adequacy of experimental design (methodology, controls, replication), extent to which objectives were met, difficulty and thoroughness of research, validity of conclusions based upon data, technical merit, and contribution to science.
-Poster – Organization (clarity of introduction, objectives, methods, results, conclusions), quality of illustrations, ability to answer questions, and knowledge of subject.
Announcement of Awards
The names of finalists will be announced and awards will be presented at the closing session of FoodMicro 2018. Winners of both competitions (oral and poster) will be presented with prizes of Euro 500 and a certificate. (First Place), Euro 300 and a certificate (Second Place), and Euro 100 and a certificate (Third Place). All finalists should be present at the closing session.
